Microneedling Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 72 Hours

By The Babe Den Med Spa6 min read

Good microneedling aftercare is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment in your skin. The treatment itself takes about an hour, but what you do in the first 72 hours afterward helps your skin calm down comfortably and gives it the best conditions to do its repair work. If you live in Carlsbad or anywhere in North County San Diego and you have a session coming up, this guide walks through what is normal, what to do and what to avoid hour by hour and day by day, so you know exactly what to expect when you leave the suite in Carlsbad Village.

Why microneedling aftercare matters

Microneedling uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Those channels are what prompt the skin's natural repair process, which commonly includes producing new collagen. For the first few days, though, they also mean your skin barrier is temporarily more open and more sensitive than usual.

That is the whole logic behind aftercare. Your skin is busy repairing itself, so the goal is to keep it clean, calm and protected, and to avoid anything that could irritate it, clog it or expose it to too much sun while it recovers. Every microneedling plan at The Babe Den comes with written aftercare specific to you; this guide covers the general principles so nothing in those instructions comes as a surprise.

What is normal after microneedling

Most people can expect two to three days of pink skin after microneedling, often described as looking and feeling a little like a mild sunburn. Alongside that, it is common to notice:

  • A feeling of warmth or tightness in the treated area, especially on the first evening.
  • Mild sensitivity to touch.
  • Some dryness or light flaking as the skin settles over the following days.

These are typical signs of skin that is recovering. If something feels different from what your aftercare describes, or you are simply unsure, you can call or text (619) 871-4588.

Microneedling aftercare: the first 24 hours

The first day is when your skin is most sensitive, so this is when aftercare matters most.

Keep it simple

Let your skin rest. Follow your written instructions about when and how to cleanse, and use only the products you have been told are fine. A gentle approach is the point: no scrubbing, no exfoliating and no experimenting with new products.

Skip makeup

Makeup is commonly avoided for the first day so the freshly treated skin is not covered with products while it is most open. Your aftercare will tell you when you can return to your usual routine.

Hands off

Try not to touch, rub or pick at your face. Clean hands and a fresh pillowcase that night are small habits that help keep the skin clean while it recovers.

Avoid heat and heavy sweating

Hard workouts, saunas, hot tubs and very hot showers are generally best avoided on the first day, since heat and sweat can aggravate skin that is already warm and sensitive.

Good to know: your written aftercare always takes priority over general advice, including this article. If anything in it is unclear, ask before you leave or text (619) 871-4588 afterward.

Days two and three: what to do and avoid

By the second and third day, pinkness typically starts to fade and many people feel comfortable going about their normal day. Your skin is still recovering, though, so a few habits are worth keeping up.

TimeframeCommonly recommendedCommonly avoided
First 24 hoursRest, gentle care as instructed, clean pillowcaseMakeup, workouts, heat, touching the skin
Days 2–3Gentle cleansing, moisturizing as directed, shade and sun protectionExfoliants, strong active ingredients, long sun exposure, swimming pools
After day 3Gradually returning to your usual routine as your aftercare allowsReintroducing strong actives before you have been told it is fine

Hold off on strong active ingredients

Products such as retinoids, exfoliating acids and other strong actives are commonly paused for several days after microneedling because they can sting or irritate recovering skin. Your aftercare will tell you when it is reasonable to bring them back.

Be gentle and stay hydrated

Gentle cleansing and the moisturizing approach in your written instructions help the skin stay comfortable as any dryness or light flaking works its way out. Let flaking skin come off on its own rather than peeling it.

Skip the pool and the steam room

Chlorinated pools and steam rooms are commonly avoided for the first few days while the skin is still sensitive.

Sun protection on the North County coast

Sun protection deserves its own section in Carlsbad. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to the sun, and with the beach two blocks from the suite, it is easy to spend more time outside than you planned.

  • For the first few days, shade is your best friend. Save the beach walk or the long patio lunch for later in the week.
  • A hat is an easy way to protect your face if you do need to be outside.
  • Your aftercare will tell you when sunscreen can go back on and what kind to use. Once it can, daily sun protection helps protect the skin you are working to improve.

Many people find it easier to plan sessions around a quieter few days, which also makes it simpler to stay out of the sun.

Planning sessions and other treatments around aftercare

Microneedling is often planned as a series, so aftercare becomes a routine you repeat. A few planning tips make it easier:

  • Leave room before events. Because pinkness commonly lasts two to three days, avoid booking right before photos, a wedding or a big night out.
  • Space it from neurotoxin. At The Babe Den, microneedling is scheduled at least two weeks apart from neurotoxin, so plan both on your calendar together.
  • Mention anything new. New medications, a recent sunburn, a breakout or other skin changes are worth flagging before your next session.

If you are treating textured scarring, our guide to microneedling for acne scars explains how many sessions people commonly need and how they are spaced.

What it costs and how appointments work

At The Babe Den, microneedling is $400 for a one-hour session. Every treatment is performed by Kirstin Vail, RN, a licensed aesthetic nurse injector, with medical oversight from a Carlsbad-based supervising physician, in one private suite at 2965 Roosevelt St., Suite 1.
